Founded in 1891, The California Institute of Technology(Caltech) is located in Pasadena, the Northeast suburb of Los Angeles, California, about 11 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. It is one of the world's top private research universities.

Founded by AMOS g. thread, the university is a preparatory and vocational school. Its mission is to "expand human knowledge and benefit society through research combined with education". It became the main center of American scientific research in the early 20th century and played an important role in American war efforts during the Second World War. Today, Caltech is a world-renowned scientific and engineering research and education institution. The Institute has high research results and many high-quality facilities, such as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (owned by NASA), the Seismological Laboratory of Caltech and the international observatory network. It is one of the few technical colleges in the United States mainly devoted to teaching technical arts and applied science. Caltech offers 24 majors and six minors in each of its six academic departments. Caltech is a highly picky School: of its approximately 1000 undergraduate students, it enrolls only about 230 freshmen and 10 to 15 new transfer students each autumn. The admission rate is 8%, of which international students account for 9%. The ratio of male to female students is 46:54.
