Overview:

Ask any student who wants to become a Chinese undergraduate, where they most want to study, and most likely will mention Fudan University. Fudan University, located in the center of Shanghai, a municipality directly under the Central Government, is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It ranks among the first batch of "Double First Class" (Class A), "985 Project" and "211 Project" key construction universities in the country, and is China's top comprehensive research university. In this prosperous and beautiful metropolis, Fudan University is one of the most prestigious and selective schools in China.

Fudan University was established in 1905 shortly after the end of the Qing Dynasty in China. It was one of the first higher education institutions in China to be independently established by the private sector. The two Chinese characters of the university name are taken from Confucian philosophy, meaning "the light from the sky shines day after day"-reflecting the lofty ideals and aspirations of the school.

After the adjustment of faculties in 1952, the school became a comprehensive university focusing on the basic teaching and research of liberal arts and sciences. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University, formerly the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine founded in 1927, to form the new Fudan University.

Throughout the ups and downs of China in the 20th century, from the Japanese invasion of China in 1937 to the Cultural Revolution, Fudan University has been consistent and advancing with the times, becoming a modern comprehensive university. The school has four campuses: Handan campus, Fenglin campus, Jiangwan campus, and Zhangjiang campus. It covers an area of about 2,439,200 square meters, with a school building area of 2,241,100 square meters; there are 35 directly affiliated colleges (departments) and 18 affiliated hospitals ( 4 of them are planned to be established), with 79 undergraduate majors;

As of April 2020, Fudan University has 13,991 general undergraduate and junior college students, 22,232 postgraduates, 2,946 international students, and 3,139 teaching and research personnel. It has more than 45,000 Chinese students studying, and 1,750 from overseas, ranking second in the country. Students study in 17 schools and 69 departments, and the university grants 73 bachelor's degrees and 201 master's degrees, covering a wide range of subjects. It has consistently ranked among the top five universities in China.

Most students live and study on the main campus of Handan. Campus life is considered an important part of the personal development of students, so there are a variety of clubs-a total of 310 student clubs, including 260 undergraduate organizations, 30 graduate clubs and 19 international student clubs. Some have a long history, such as the Fudan Opera Troupe established in 1925, or the Calligraphy and Painting Club.

Community volunteer service has also become an important part of student life, with more than 50 colleges and departments of volunteer service teams. After the Wenchuan earthquake, 1,077 volunteers from Fudan University participated in the disaster relief, and another 1,300 students participated in the Beijing Olympics, Paralympics and World Swimming Championships.

Fudan has begun to expand its tentacles to the world and has established academic exchange programs and partnerships with more than 200 universities and research institutions, including Harvard, Columbia, and the London School of Economics.

Its alumni are outstanding politicians, artists and scientists who have performed well in their respective fields, including World Bank President Zhang Shengman, and the pioneer of amputated limb surgery Chen Zhongwei.
