City University of Hong Kong ( or CityU) is a world-renowned international public research university. It is one of the eight higher education institutions funded by the University Grants Committee. It is the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Smart Campus Alliance , Beijing-Hong Kong University Alliance, Sino-Russian Engineering University Alliance, Shanghai-Hong Kong University Alliance member universities.


The City University of Hong Kong’s campus in Kowloon Tong has a total area of 15.6 hectares. The school has 7 colleges with more than 130 professional subjects and 1 graduate school. There are about 20,000 students in the school, of which 6,500 are graduate students and more than 1,000 faculty and staff. CityU is located in the heart of Asia's cosmopolitan city, providing professional education for the rapidly changing world of the 21st century. A biomedical research team has developed a breakthrough technology that can detect cancer cells with as little as 4 ml of blood in less than five minutes, with an accuracy rate of over 90%.

An environmental scientist has developed a new zero-pollution technology that uses sunlight to split water into clean hydrogen to generate renewable energy. This technology uses photoelectric catalysis to improve the conversion efficiency of solar energy.


A research team from the Department of Biomedicine revealed for the first time that schema learning can promote the growth and regeneration of brain myelin, thereby enhancing the synchronization of neural networks and improving learning and memory capabilities.


In the 2022 QS World University Rankings, the City University of Hong Kong ranked 53rd, and ranked 1st in the “World University Rankings” in the “Times Higher Education” 2020 World University Rankings. Research Degree Programmes


CityU offers two types of research degree programmes: Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). We offer MPhil and PhD programmes in all Colleges and Schools in a range of strategic areas that reflect the University’s strengths and suit individual research interests. The programmes consist of both coursework and independent research studies, culminating in the submission of a thesis. 


Professional Doctorate Programmes


Professional Doctorate programmes have both taught and research components. With an integrated curriculum of theory, practice and research, the programmes aim to develop innovative thinking and knowledge application capability to solve important strategic problems in their professions. 


Taught Postgraduate Programmes


More than 50 taught postgraduate programmes in diverse and extensive subject areas help students pursue their personal interests, professional excellence and career advancement. Students receive an innovative, in-depth education mainly in the form of coursework while some programmes may require the completion of a project or thesis. Programmes may be offered in full-time, part-time or combined mode, and generally require one to two years of study, depending on the credit load requirements on individual programmes.
